Students gain a real insight into the world of work during work experience trips

Throughout the past academic year, our students have had the opportunity to meet and work with many of Studio@Deyes’ employer partners. This includes the opportunity to attend a keynote speech by Justine Mills, owner of Cricket fashion, during our launch event in November last year. Students also had the opportunity to talk to Justine about their work and ask her for fashion tips and advice. In January, we were also visited by Carly Phillips, a former Juice Academy apprentice who was selected to work as Bruntwood’s first Social Media apprentice. With a love for all things Social Media, Carly is also a lifestyle blogger outside of work. Carly shared her experiences and advice about how to #MAKEIT in the creative world of marketing and social media.

As well as receiving talks from employers at Studio@Deyes, students have also been able to complete various trips to employer offices, including a trip to The Leather Satchel Co. in October where they gained a valuable insight into the leather work industry. Later in the year, The Leather Satchel Co. were visited again by our Year 12 Engineering students as part of their work on a project which involved designing a new steering wheel for a green powered racing car. Working with The Leather Satchel Company was a valuable experience for our students as it enabled them to see each stage of the project life cycle, from project initiation to project close down,

Recently, a group of our students and students from our sister school, Deyes High School, were also lucky enough to visit Ernst & Young’s very swanky Liverpool City Centre offices to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). The students were treated to some wonderful views of the city, while taking part in several activities designed to help them understand the vast array of STEM related career options available to them. For one task, students had to set up mini ’companies’ and produce a new paper airplane toy.

Students have also participated in numerous other work experience trips during the year, including a trip to Beverston Engineering in February where students received a tour and learnt about how the site operates and a visit to Barclays Bank in June to participate in a Digital Eagles session.

A huge thank you to all of our employer partners for their contributions, our students look forward to working with you again during our next academic year!

Studio@Deyes build relations with employers at our Employer Engagement Events

Every half term, Studio@Deyes invites several of our employer partners to participate in a Breakfast@Studio event. Our employer engagement events have been well attended over this past academic year and representatives of Studio Mundo, Royal Court Liverpool, Zoe’s Place, NatWest, Unilever, Gill’s Fitness and even Tony Calderia, who was a Metro Mayor Candidate, have all attended. During these events, employers partake in a short breakfast networking session followed by a second session which varies each time and offers an opportunity for employers to interact with students. For example, during the July event, employers completed mock interviews with students in the second session. Mock interviews are an essential element in developing the skills and qualities needed by young people for their future careers. A mock interview can provide a realistic experience for the student, helping to build their confidence and preparing them for future interviews.

Our breakfast meetings are proving to be very popular and a valuable contribution to our careers and employer engagement strategy moving forward. These events help to generate new ideas and push through real change. For example, during one of our recent breakfast meetings we discussed mentoring. As a direct result of these discussions, Studio@Deyes recruited 8 mentors for a pilot programme over the summer term which we hope to extend to a full programme in September.

Studio@Deyes are already in the process of planning a series of six Breakfast@Studio events which will be held during the 2017/18 academic year. The first event is scheduled for 18th October 2017 during which Gill Lindsay of Gill’s Health and Fitness will present.

Introducing our Director of Careers & Employer Engagement

Ms Jones became our Director of Careers and Employer Engagement in January 2017 having worked for the Lydiate Learning Trust for 3 and a half years. After graduating with a degree in Psychology from the University of Liverpool in 2007, Ms Jones gained valuable experience working in delivering outcomes for Children and Young People in various roles across the country. As part of her current role, Ms Jones is responsible for arranging all work experience placements and ensuring that they are aligned with student’s career aspirations and interests. She also runs careers programmes for students and provides careers education, information, advice and guidance. Her role requires her to liaise with employers and build and manage an extensive network of professional contacts. As a result, she runs a variety of different employer engagement events during the school term, including Breakfast@Studio events, school trips and employer talks.

“As I come from a family of teachers, I have known from an early age that I wanted to make a difference to the lives of Children and Young People. Often, the success of an education provider is measured on progress and attainment. However, whilst it is important to equip young people with qualifications, I feel it is equally vital to ensure they are able to succeed beyond the education system. I look forward to working with the Lydiate Learning Trust community to ensure our students are provided with the tools to help them achieve their potential in the job market.” – Ms Jones

Studio@Deyes Capital FM Takeover

Last week two of our student stylists, Eden and Demi, and our Head of Fashion, Katy Power, had the opportunity to visit the Capital Liverpool studio and meet Capital host Adam. Our students chatted to Adam live on air about transforming his look and updating his wardrobe so that he has fashionable outfits to wear when he presents at the British Style Collective event in July.
After preparing three outfits using clothes and accessories chosen from the V by Very collection at Shop Direct, our students met Adam at Studio@Deyes at the end of the week to complete his makeover. After our students worked their fashion magic, Adam revealed his new look in a photo shoot and Eden even gave Adam tips on how to strut his stuff on a catwalk!
Working with Capital FM has undoubtedly been an unforgettable experience for our students and we are confident that they will #MAKEIT in their future careers in the fashion industry!

Student Stylists visit Shop Direct

Last week two of our talented student stylists visited Shop Direct to explore the latest trends in preparation for the challenge to makeover Capital FM’s breakfast show host, Adam, for his role in presenting the British Style Collective in July! Our students were taken on a tour of the building and met Shop Direct’s Head of User Experience, Sam Barton, and members of the buying team who gave students an insight into the latest fashion trends.
The team utilised their fashion expertise to select clothes and accessories from the V by Very collection as they prepared three outfits for a makeover of Capital FM Liverpool host Adam. The outfits created showcased our students eye for fashion and gave Adam ideas of what he should wear when he presents at the British Style Collective in July!
Working with Shop Direct and Capital FM has been an amazing opportunity for our students and has given them valuable experience of working in the fashion industry.
